How to Match Wallpaper With Furniture

By Celia Alida Rutte, !nspire’s Designer at Large

A bonafide wallpaper renaissance is upon us, and the current variety is exquisite.

Gone are the grandma florals and hard to remove wallpaper of yesterday. Wallpaper manufacturers have created everything from full size high resolution photo imagery to papers decorated with real stone shavings.

They have even created wall coverings that mimic real life materials like mosaic tile and weathered wood so well that they challenge our need for the real material.

If you are looking to jazz up your living space with a sexy new look, consider some of these wallpapers from the Toronto based company Prime Walls. I’ve paired them up with some of my favorites from Inspire’s lovely 2015 seating collection to get your mouth watering and your design senses tingling with inspiration.

One of the easiest ways to coordinate furniture, fabrics and wallpaper is to look for a matching colour thread.

This lovely apple green bench with its lightly textured fabric teams up beautifully with the multi-coloured floral wallpaper because of the shade of green that is common in both. Consider letting this duo be the inspiration for a front entry, a living room, or even a bedroom.

I adore the way this whimsical floral looks with the aubree accent chair. These two lovelies work well together because the colours complement each other. More importantly, they share a similar style.

Surround a dining room table with 6-8 of these chairs and adorn the walls with a whimsical floral like this and you are sure to have a winner.

The handsome nora chair works well with this geometric wallpaper in part because they share soft subdued colour tones.

A toss cushion on the chair in a complimenting solid colour would work well. Too much pattern can be overwhelming. If you put bold and busy on the walls I would advise the novice decorator to concentrate on solid colours and simple textures in the furniture.

I spoke earlier about papers that mimic real life materials.

This gorgeous wallpaper reflects that trend with a fresh interpretation of weathered beach wood. Paired with the stylish electra accent chair in white or black, you have a wonderful modern look.

Celia’s Expert Design Tip: what comes first, the wallpaper of the chair? Here is your key consideration regarding the order in which you source room materials:

Source the items with the least available options first; for example, that one of a kind !nspire chair that you love will be limited in its available colours and materials, but there are 10,000 plus wallpapers at your fingertips. So in this case, I recommend you find that favorite chair and then source the wallpaper to match.
